We focus our investments on businesses in Africa and South Asia. We are one of the biggest impact investors in these markets, with a 70-year track record of helping companies to grow in challenging business environments.
We invest where we can achieve the biggest development impact. This means our decision-making process encourages investment in the countries with the most challenging investment climates. We rank countries (and individual states in the case of India) based on their investment difficulty, which considers measures like access to finance, ease of doing business, and GDP per capita.
To help us direct our investments, we use a tool we have developed called the Development Impact Grid. The Grid scores every investment we plan based on two factors: the difficulty of investing in the country and whether investment in that sector will lead to jobs.
