The primary objective of the project is to deploy electrical energy as quickly as possible to support the Government of Ghana's short-term strategy for power generation. The project is also needed to meet more long-term objectives to help meet the increasing energy demand in Ghana to ensure its continued social and economic development.
Once complete, the project will provide 202 MW of generation capacity in Ghana to increase the supply of reliable electricity to households and industry, increasing firm productivity, facilitating economic growth and job creation. The tri-fuel flexibility (natural gas, LPG and diesel) enables the plant to provide reliable power to the grid if there are indigenous gas supply constraints.
Environmental and social aspects
CDC's monitoring during the early stages of construction identified labour-related aspects that required improvements. Also, stakeholder engagement with the local community needed to be enhanced. Through the lenders' environmental and social (E&S) monitoring advisor, steady progress has been made with respect to these issues and the project is now broadly aligned with the relevant international E&S standards.
Since 2012, we’ve only invested in Africa and South Asia. Investments outside these regions are from our pre-2012 portfolio.
- Africa, West Africa
We have seven priority sectors. However, we continue to invest outside these sectors, largely in the most challenging regions, as new investment supporting any sector helps to underpin the private sector, and create jobs and livelihoods for people.
