Ian Barney

External Investment Committee member

After a brief flirtation with a career in Investment Analysis (for 4 years he covered Oil and Gas, Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals for a UK based mutual insurance company) Ian spent 10 years (1995-2004) at the Centre for Development Studies in Swansea, studying, researching, teaching and practicing International development. His key research interests were around business and rural livelihoods and I managed a number of integrated social development projects in India, Jordan and elsewhere.

From 2004 to 2012 Ian was Managing Director of Twin and Twin Trading a pioneering Fair Trade organisation working with smallholder farmers in Africa, Latin America and Asia. During that time he helped establish a number of producer ‘owned’ social enterprises and sat on the boards of Divine Chocolate, Liberation Foods and Afri-Nut- a Malawi based nut processing business we established with local cooperatives.

Since leaving Twin he has been self-employed carrying out a full range of interesting and not so interesting assignments. These have included support to strategic planning process for Acacia PLC (helping them to maximise their contribution to Community Wellbeing in and around their mine sites) and Shared Interest and the production of a range of practical enterprise development guidance documents for CAFOD and CARE International.
